On May 15, 2023, at 15:00, a statement from the InterAgency Institute took place during the Second session of the 2023 Group of Governmental Experts (GGE) on emerging technologies in the area of lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS) under the Convention on Conventional Weapons. At this session, our Affiliate Researcher, Luís C. Farias, had the privilege of presenting a statement representing the InterAgency Institute. This statement was another step forward in our ongoing efforts to collaborate with Stop Killer Robots, as we share a common objective of addressing the challenges posed by autonomous functionalities in weapons systems.

We greatly value the opportunity to actively participate in such crucial discussions, and we strongly believe that civil society participation in such forums is crucial to ensure a more democratic and inclusive UN system. Our Affiliate Researcher’s statement was clear on the need for a legally binding instrument to create clear red lines for the specifications, developments and use of weapons systems that rely on Artificial Intelligence to perform their aiming and engaging functionalities.

The InterAgency Institute remains committed to fostering collaboration and cooperation with organizations such as Stop Killer Robots to advance our shared objectives. We believe that by joining forces, we can make a significant impact in addressing the ethical and humanitarian concerns surrounding LAWS.
